Brightside Farm Sanctuary
Story
Brightside Farm Sanctuary began in 2006, when Emma Haswell bought a bare 50-acre paddock in Tasmania’s Huon Valley, about an hour south of Hobart, intending to create a refuge for rescued animals at a time when nothing similar existed in the state.
It is now a permanent home to hundreds of animals, including cows, sheep, pigs, horses, donkeys, goats, geese, ducks and rescued battery hens. Among its residents are rabbits who spent most of their lives in cages, used to breed young for meat.
Alongside the sanctuary, Brightside runs a large rescue and rehoming programme, placing hundreds of animals a year in approved homes, most of them dogs. In 2013, Emma Haswell was inducted into the Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women for her animal welfare work.

Know a sanctuary we should feature?
World Sanctuaries is a growing directory of places providing refuge and lifelong care to animals. If you know a sanctuary that belongs here, we’d love to hear about it.
