Little Oak Sanctuary
Story
Little Oak Sanctuary takes its name from a piglet. In 2012, Kate and James Luke adopted two piglets, Tiger and Little Timmy. When Timmy fell ill and died later that year, they planted an oak tree over his grave and named the sanctuary in his honour.
Pigs remain the sanctuary’s flagship species, but residents now include sheep, goats, cattle, horses, turkeys, geese, ducks and hens, many rescued from neglect, abandonment or farming. After outgrowing its original property, Little Oak moved to 273 acres between Bungendore and Braidwood.
Some animals are placed in vetted permanent homes, while the rest stay for life. The sanctuary is not a petting zoo: animals are never taken off site for outreach, visits are small and guided, and residents are free to walk away from people.
