Liberation Sanctuary
Story
Liberation Sanctuary began in 1986, when several battery hens were surrendered to Patty Mark, founder of Animal Liberation Victoria. She cared for them at her home in suburban Melbourne, which grew into an urban sanctuary for hens, roosters, ducks, geese, sheep, pigs, goats, calves and rabbits.
In 2016 the sanctuary moved to 45 acres in the West Gippsland hills, where it is now home to more than 140 rescued animals. Some arrived through Animal Liberation Victoria’s open rescues from factory farms and its actions at abattoirs.
The sanctuary describes itself as Australia’s longest-running farm animal sanctuary, and it is guided by respect for the autonomy of each animal in its care.

Know a sanctuary we should feature?
World Sanctuaries is a growing directory of places providing refuge and lifelong care to animals. If you know a sanctuary that belongs here, we’d love to hear about it.
