Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary

United Kingdom450 animals

Story

Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary was founded in 1993 by Fiona Oakes, a lifelong vegan who is also a record-breaking marathon runner. In December 1996 she and her partner, Martin, moved to the sanctuary at Asheldham, near Maldon in Essex, with their animal family. The next day an injured horse named Oscar arrived, and he lived there until old age.

The sanctuary now cares for more than 450 animals across several sites on Essex’s Dengie Peninsula, including horses, pigs, sheep, cows, goats, turkeys, chickens, ducks, dogs and cats.

Fiona does most of the daily care herself, with Martin’s help, and raises much of the sanctuary’s funding through long-distance running challenges.

Know a sanctuary we should feature?

World Sanctuaries is a growing directory of places providing refuge and lifelong care to animals. If you know a sanctuary that belongs here, we’d love to hear about it.
