Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary
Story
Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary was founded in 2007 by Jim and Sharon Shaw to give primates in distress a permanent home. Based near Ascot in Berkshire, it has rescued more than 50 monkeys and lemurs, including macaques and ring-tailed lemurs, from the pet trade, laboratories, circuses and zoos.
Rescued primates live in social groups with their own kind, in woodland enclosures where they can recover from physical and psychological trauma.
The sanctuary is deliberately closed to the public, in the belief that its residents have the right to peace and tranquillity. In 2023 it was verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.

Know a sanctuary we should feature?
World Sanctuaries is a growing directory of places providing refuge and lifelong care to animals. If you know a sanctuary that belongs here, we’d love to hear about it.
