The Surge Sanctuary

United Kingdom150 animals

Story

The Surge Sanctuary opened in December 2020 on 18 acres near Selston in Nottinghamshire. It was set up by the animal rights organisation Surge, co-founded by educator Ed Winters, and was funded largely by profits from Unity Diner, the non-profit vegan restaurant Surge opened in London in 2018.

It now cares for more than 150 rescued animals, including pigs, cows, sheep, goats, chickens and turkeys. Among them are Matilda and her piglets: Matilda escaped a farm while pregnant and gave birth in woodland near Ollerton, where a dog walker found the family.

Residents stay for life, and visits are limited to booked tours and event days so that the animals’ routines come first.

Know a sanctuary we should feature?

World Sanctuaries is a growing directory of places providing refuge and lifelong care to animals. If you know a sanctuary that belongs here, we’d love to hear about it.
