HUHA
Story
HUHA began as the Pakuratahi Farm Animal Sanctuary, founded in 2001 when Carolyn Press-McKenzie and Jim McKenzie bought 13 acres at Kaitoke, north of Upper Hutt. Carolyn had been rescuing farm animals since 1998 on a smaller property, and in 2008 the sanctuary became HUHA, Helping You Help Animals.
HUHA is now a national animal rescue charity with a strict no-kill policy. Most of its work is rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming animals, but those who cannot be rehomed or released, nearly 150 of them, stay in its permanent sanctuary care. Residents have included farmed animals and former circus monkeys.
In 2026, HUHA helped bring together investors who bought a closed Northland wildlife park, so that five elderly lions facing euthanasia could live out their lives there.

Know a sanctuary we should feature?
World Sanctuaries is a growing directory of places providing refuge and lifelong care to animals. If you know a sanctuary that belongs here, we’d love to hear about it.
