The Animal Sanctuary – Matakana

Story

The Animal Sanctuary was started in 2002 by Shawn Bishop and Michael Dixon, who left corporate careers in Auckland to give abused and unwanted animals a home for life. Their 32-acre property near Matakana provides grazing for rescued farm animals and borders 162 hectares of protected bush, where rehabilitated native birds can be released.

Residents include cattle, pigs, goats, ducks and other farm animals, many of whom arrived injured, neglected or abandoned.

The sanctuary also rehabilitates hens from commercial egg farms and finds homes for some animals it cannot keep. It is run with the help of volunteers, and visits are arranged for supporters rather than offered to the general public.

Know a sanctuary we should feature?

World Sanctuaries is a growing directory of places providing refuge and lifelong care to animals. If you know a sanctuary that belongs here, we’d love to hear about it.
